Mother Nature’s Spa Garden

To design something so perfect for it’s place is a true work of art. Sami Rintala and a group of students from Västlands Kunstakademie built this sauna for the town of Rosendal Village, Hardangerfjord, Norway.

They describe it :

A Finnish sauna room: around 90 C heat is
enjoyed, especially in wintertime (-20 C outside)
by sitting on wooden benches and throwing
water on hot stones on the stove. Sweat and
silence, mental purification and physical
maintainance. A swim in cold water in between.

Anchored in the middle of the fjord,
a level of privacy is maintained for bathers.
Little winter daylight comes through transparent
walls. At night sauna shines as a floating lantern.
Access with rowing boat only.
Descending swimming straight through the floor of water.
Using any kind of soap is prohibited due to ecological reasons.

This is the ultimate spa landscape, mostly mother nature created. Exceptionally warm waters are made possible by the Gulf Stream stretching to the fjords of Norway, they don’t freeze in the winter – which is remarkable considering the arctic location.

(Teuva, FINLAND) I think this is mobile because you could throw it in the back of a truck. I don’t know about those all glass walls, but I would be willing to try it out with a few friends. This is but one example from the legendary Mobile Sauna Festival in Teuva, FINLAND. Another similar sauna at Teuva joined 4 phone booths into one sauna.

What to do with the extra space on an old factory rooftop? Build a small multipurpose sauna, of course! This is the response of Daniel Zamarbide and Leopold Banchini, the architects from the Swiss practice Bureau A who came up with the project.

The Kugler factory was built in 1863 to manufacture valves and taps and is located on the banks of the Rhone in Geneva, Switzerland.

After production was transferred, the old factory was redeveloped and converted for a new use, through “Fédération des artistes de Kugler” (FAK): 130 arts and crafts people formed an association to manage the multipurpose areas created inside the industrial estate.

A special touch in the scope of this conversion sits on the building’s rooftop, where the architects from Bureau A, Daniel Zamarbide and Leopold Banchini, both extremely active in the field of architectural experimentation and research, built a sauna in collaboration with artist Jérémie Gindre and L-Sud association.

But this isn’t just any old sauna – it’s a small timber hut that holds everything needed for a sauna and that can also be used as a small studio or getaway. A small, multipurpose space, like a nest on the roof.

A concrete example of creativity applied as part of a redevelopment and conversion plan; added value with a view over the old factory’s sloping rooftops and the city of Geneva.

It's the event where competitors work up more of a sweat than anyone at the Olympic Games, just by sitting still.

The 10th annual Sauna World Championship took place in Heinola, Finland, over the weekend, with 160 men and women from 23 countries trying to tough it out in the heat for as long as possible.

Given that their country gave the sauna to the world, it wasn't too much of a surprise to see the Finns dominating.

Competitors concentrate as they bear the intense heat during the men's semi-finals of the World Sauna Championships.

Finnish Timo Kaukonen won the men's event by staying in the sauna for three minutes, 46 seconds.

And Tatyana Arkhipenko from Russian took the women's title with a time of three minutes, nine seconds.

If those times sound unspectacular, bear in mind that the saunas were heated to 110c, and half a litre of water was poured on the sizzling stones every 30 seconds, making it far more gruelling than the average relaxing sauna, which is 70-80c.
'It wasn't fun after two or three minutes,' admitted the contest's organiser Ossi Arvela.

What do you exactly do in the Finnish sauna and what not?

1. There are no sauna rules in Finland. This list is only for foreign readers. Once you have read and internalised this list, there will be no more rules for you, either.
2. If you turn down an invitation to a sauna, you’d better have a good reason. It is an honour to be invited to a sauna. Go on, just give it a try.
3. Forget about coloured lights, aromatic fragrances and mood music. In the sauna it is nearly dark and there should be no smell – just birch or natural tar at the most. Music is never played in a Finnish sauna.
4. Forget about the clock. And forget about the little sand timer that tells you when you’re supposed to throw more water on the stove. In a Finnish sauna, you can throw more water on whenever you want.
5. Everybody can go in the sauna. Saunas are good for everyone. Only babies and people with serious conditions like open wounds or heart problems should avoid the sauna. Everybody else can go in the sauna with no problems – the Finns have been doing it for generations and have survived to tell the tale.
6. A Finnish sauna is a place for relaxation. You can take off your clothes without worrying about it. That’s how all of us were born and Finns, they really don’t mind. They also don’t mind if you’ll wrap yourself with a towel to make you feel more comfortable.
7. Who goes into the sauna together? The usual Finnish way is for families to go in the sauna together. Or the women can go together first, and then the men. This is how it’s generally done in larger groups. Men and women who do not know each other don’t go in the sauna together. And no – in a Finnish sauna you normally don’t wear a swimsuit or a towel.
8. Be sure to drink plenty. You can also take a beer or cider into the sauna.
9. A ‘vasta’ or ‘vihta’ (the name depends on the region) is a bundle of fresh birch twigs and the best thing that can happen to your skin. You’ll feel the benefits afterwards and will notice how smooth your skin is after the combination of sauna and vasta. Mother Nature knows best.
10. Have you read these rules carefully? Good. Now forget that they were called rules! The headline was just a trick to grab your attention. There really aren’t any rules in a Finnish sauna. Saunas are relaxed, easy-going places.
